Visitors to Slovakia know, or have at the very least, visited the capital city of Slovakia, Bratislava. Bratislava has been home to kings, queens, poets, musicians, and people of just about every profession at one point or another. Strangely enough, Bratislava was not always Bratislava. It was once called Pressburg or Pozsony, depending on which language the city was being introduced in. Though its current name was only given to it approximately 90 years ago, Bratislava has long been known in Europe for a relaxed atmosphere that is still filled to the brim with history, culture, events, and activities to discover.

Throughout the area's history, the area of Bratislava has been called home by many peoples. The Celts, Romans, Jews, Hungarians, and Germans have all presided in this scenic space. As a result, the culture is a mix of basically all of Europe, as well as influenced by the cultures of other parts of the world. Houses of the nobles and notables of the Austro-Hungarian empire still can be spotted in streets of Bratislava, as can the Bratislava Castle. Sculptures and museums, galleries and schools, all can tell you volumes about Slovakia's rich history in Bratislava.

When it comes to getting a good dose of culture, Bratislava is a good place to begin. Along with museums and similar historical treasures, visitors and locals often find themselves indulging in Slovakian culture through the vineyards. Just outside of Bratislava are the vineyards which are responsible for producing the country's wine, which is always available for purchase inside the city. With dashes of French cafe cuisine, traditional Slovak cuisine, and German restaurants dotting the city's section of the Danube River, it's going to be difficult to avoid the tradition of enjoying a great meal in Bratislava.

Bratislava also has several noteworthy events that you should consider attending. One of the best events for movie buffs to discover is the Bratislava International Movie Festival, which is held annually in November. Often considered to be the Cannes Film Festival of Eastern Europe, the Bratislava International Movie Festival is one that is a must for those who want to see the finest in independent films. Along with film festivals, Bratislava is also known for its New Year's Eve parties, which take place every year. Though it is cold, it's not uncommon to see 9,000 to 10,000 people in the streets of this Slovakian city partying to their hearts' content.

Visiting Slovakia is always a good idea if it's your first time going to Europe, but there are some things that you need to be aware of before you decide to visit Bratislava. First, you will need to know a little bit about the language issue that often pops up in European travel. Most Slovakians speak 2-3 languages, but the primary language you'll hear in Bratislava are Slovak, with English as a secondary language. Older Slovaks will also speak Russian or German.

It's also a good idea to know about religions that are common in the area in order to avoid offending people by something you may say or do. Bratislava is not your average city when it comes to religion. Though about half of Bratislava does ascribe to the Roman Catholic faith, the next largest percentage of the population is atheist. Atheists make approximately 29% of the population. This is much higher than average in both the United States and Europe.

Lastly, you might want to learn about some of the city symbols you may find in Bratislava. These include the Slovak flag, which is a red and white flag, and the coat of arms of Bratislava. The coat of arms is a bright red flag with the Bratislava castle depicted on it, with a half-up portocullis welcoming people into the town. This coat of arms harkens back to Bratislava's medieval days, which are still oddly enough, alive in their own ways today.

Bratislava itself is an odd juxtaposition of the old and the new, the East and the West, and the past and the future. If you go to Bratislava, you will want to bring a camera and take photos. This one of a kind city always seems to cast a charming spell over visitors, since many return simply to see the picturesque landscape once more.
