Why are Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan important?

Turkmenistan has the smallest population of the five former Soviet republics in Central Asia. It is made up mainly of desert, and is important as it has the world's fifth largest estimated reserves of natural gas. Turkmenistan declared its sovereignty in1990,and becamea member of the Commonwealth of Independent States in 1991, together with ten other former Soviet republics. Uzbekistan's majestic cities such as Bukhara and Samarkand, famed for their architectural opulence, once flourished as trade and cultural centres. Today, it is one of the world's biggest producers of cotton.
